My First Still Life Painting

I want to share with you one of my earliest still life paintings that I did when I first came to the United States. It’s a red rose!

I named this beautiful red rose painting, ‘Mother’s Day Rose’, as a reminder of Mother’s Day. It was my first time celebrating Mother’s Day in the US with my husband and our first born son. I was barely settled in my new country, I had been here just a few months. My husband and son surprised me in the afternoon with a lovely bouquet of red roses. I was jumping for joy and quickly grabbed my camera to capture this moment and snapped a bunch of photos of the roses.

Although, at that time, my main focus was portrait paintings and nothing else, I thought that painting this flower would be an exciting challenge for me. As a portrait artist at the time, it was a great break from painting portraits.

The original painting was 8” x 10” and created with colored pencil.

I had a print framed and it’s currently hanging in our dining room. The rose is long gone, but because I turned the photo of this rose into a painting, the memory is ever present and I smile every time I look at it.
